Named after French explorer Antoine Laumet de La Mothe Cadillac, who founded Detroit in 1701, the Cadillac brand came into being by engineer Henry Leland in 1902. He proposed combining Ford’s latest chassis frame with a single-cylinder engine developed by Oldsmobile and the first Cadillac car was born. It made its debut at the New York Auto Show the following year – priced at $850 – and the rest is history.
